
Why We Use Shortwave Infrared for Bathrooms
Ever stepped into a drafty changing room after a shower and felt that immediate chill? It’s the worst. Most HVAC systems try to fix this by heating the air, but that takes forever. By the time the room actually feels warm, you’re already dressed and gone. That’s why we build infrared heaters into mirrors and changing areas. Instead of fighting the air, shortwave IR just skips it. It goes straight for your skin and the surfaces around you, turning energy into heat in a matter of seconds. It’s instant.
How it actually works
We use quartz halogen tubes to get that speed. By packing a quartz envelope with halogen gas, we can push the filament to much higher temperatures without it just burning out. This shifts the heat into shorter wavelengths. The result? The warmth penetrates deeper and doesn’t get blown away by a stray breeze or an open door. When you step in front of one of these, you aren’t waiting for the room to catch up. You feel the heat immediately.
The tricky part: Fitting them in
Squeezing these into a mirror frame isn’t exactly a walk in the park. We have to be incredibly precise with the measurements. Because we want to keep the footprint small, we use high power density. Just a heads-up: your wiring needs to be ready for that initial power surge. And because those quartz tubes get scorching hot, you can’t just leave them bare. You need protective guards. If you don’t get the spacing and shielding right, you’ll end up overheating the mirror glass or warping the frame.
A few things to keep in mind
You can swap these into spots where traditional electric strips used to go, but they don’t act the same way. This heat is intense and directional. If your angle is off by even a little bit, you’ll end up with cold spots. You really have to map out where the person is actually standing to get the beam right. Plus, since these can get very hot very quickly in a small space, we always suggest adding a thermal cutoff switch. It keeps things from getting too cozy—and prevents the unit from running forever.
